Netflix recently released a compelling three-part documentary featuring historical footage of Sir Winston Churchill, the former Prime Minister of England, during his time in office, leading Great Britain and serving the Queen. Churchill’s legacy remains a source of fascination, with over 1,100 books written about his life—spanning his early struggles, his role as an outsider at the onset of World War II, and his passions for painting and writing.

January 24th marks 60 years since Churchill’s passing, yet his leadership skills and legacy continue to captivate and inspire. The film delves into Churchill’s multifaceted personality, highlighting how his habits, quirks, and strengths contributed to his effectiveness as a leader.

As portrayed in the documentary, Churchill had a complex personality that blended discipline, creativity, and resilience. He maintained a dedicated daily routine, a fondness for alcohol that might alarm some, and a remarkable ability to write prolifically.

Churchill’s use of language, humor, and communication was among his greatest leadership strengths. He adhered to a disciplined writing schedule, often working in the early morning or late at night to avoid interruptions. Writing by hand on large notepads with a fountain pen allowed him to refine his thoughts and ideas. Churchill was meticulous about revising his work, often rewriting drafts multiple times to improve clarity and enhance the impact of his prose.

For Churchill, the power of his words was inseparable from his power to lead.

The documentary also highlights Churchill’s distinctive leadership skills, which are as relevant today as they were during his time.

1. Resilience and Determination: Churchill showed unwavering commitment, refusing to consider surrender even during Britain’s darkest hours. His ability to inspire hope and perseverance united the British people.

2. Communication Skills: An exceptional orator, Churchill’s speeches were rich with emotion and vivid imagery, mobilizing the nation and instilling courage during challenging times.

3. Visionary Thinking: Churchill had a clear vision for the world and Britain’s future and wasn’t afraid to make difficult decisions to achieve his long-term goals.

4. Adaptability: He demonstrated flexibility by adjusting strategies as circumstances evolved, focusing on achieving victory rather than being “right.”

5. Team Building: Churchill surrounded himself with a diverse team of advisors and fostered collaborative problem-solving. Known for his conversational style, he loved to listen and “chat it up.”

6. Taking Responsibility: Willing to accept blame for failures, Churchill’s credibility and integrity strengthened his leadership. While criticized for flipping sides, he lived by this belief: “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”

7. Passion and Energy: Despite his irregular hours and lack of physical fitness, Churchill’s boundless enthusiasm and mental sharpness inspired urgency and purpose in those around him.

8. Historical Awareness: Churchill was a student of history, using lessons from the past to inform his decisions and navigate complex situations in the present.

These principles, combined with Churchill’s relentless drive, helped him lead Britain through a time of profound crisis. His legacy remains a guiding light for leaders across disciplines, offering timeless lessons on courage, vision, and adaptability.

Each year, we grow more captivated by Churchill’s leadership talents and visionary thinking—qualities that not only greatly shaped history but continue to inspire us to this day.
