C'Mon Man! Demand, Don't Beg!

In our effort to inspire those we coach to perform at a higher level, we tend to use language that seems to be begging for more, instead of demanding more.

Introduced in 2008, "C'Mon Man!" is a popular segment during ESPN's Monday Night Countdown show. The television personalities use the term when a play or series of events make them scratch their heads out of disbelief of the lack of execution and performance. It is often funny and sad for the person who is the object of this segment. Yet, in reality, it's much like leading the people around uswe all expect more from our players and colleagues and often use the phrase C'Mon Team!

In our effort to inspire those we coach to perform at a higher level, we tend to use language that seems to be begging for more, instead of demanding more. Any time you use the word "C'Mon," you must understand the difference between begging and demanding.

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

Demand: An act of demanding or asking, especially with authority.

Beg: To ask for as a charity.

When we are leading our teams and organizations, we are speaking from authority, with a definite purpose. When we shift into "begging" mode, we are unsure, hoping for moreand as we know, you can "never confuse hope for a plan." When we beg, we are hoping for something magical to transpire, and not planning for it. When we demand, we are referring to the plan that is in place.

Demanding at times can sound rude, self-centered, and uninspiring, especially if everyone on the team is unaware of the ultimate goal. For example, if you're coaching basketball at any level and know you must improve your defensive play—then demanding the right stance and proper technique from players is not rude. It is the accountability the team ultimately needs to get better. If you don't demand, if you don't push the players, then you are not coaching, you're watching. Your demanding words should always align with the overall message. Setting the levels of acceptance beforehand, then using those levels when addressing the team separates the demanders, from the beggars.

Next time you watch a "C'Mon Man!" segment on ESPN, be sure to remind yourself, never to beg, always demand!
