Dear 2024: Reflections on Leadership and Life
Your lessons will linger far beyond your calendar days. They will shape how I lead, love, and live in the days ahead.
Dear 2024,
Before the clocks strike midnight, I wanted to express some things to you. Do you have a moment?
I find myself sitting with the weight of all you’ve been—reflecting on how you’ve shaped me, challenged me, and left your mark on my heart. You’ve been a year of extremes, a year that demanded more than I thought I could give. The highs you brought were exhilarating, almost euphoric—moments that made me believe in the boundless potential of what’s possible. But the lows—the lows were profound, humbling, painful, and, at times, soul-crushing. You tested my resolve in ways I wasn’t prepared for.
There were decisions that kept me awake at night, questions I couldn’t answer, and moments when the pressure felt unbearable. And yet, I kept moving forward, I kept rising—not because I always felt confident, but because I chose to believe that leadership, like life, isn’t about always knowing. It’s about showing up, it’s about putting one foot in front of the other. It’s about trusting that no matter how dark a moment or day gets, the sun will always rise in the morning.
You reminded me that leadership isn’t really about titles, championships, boardrooms, or accolades. Those things are cool, yet often forgotten and don’t endure the test of time. Leadership is about people and humanity. It’s about feeling the full spectrum of what it means to be alive—courage, fear, doubt, joy, love—and still standing tall, still choosing to serve, still choosing to show up. You showed me that true leadership begins with the willingness to be vulnerable, to admit I don’t have all the answers, and to lean into the strength of others when my own feels depleted. You taught me authentic leadership requires engaging in the exploration of inner work—shedding, releasing, relearning and transforming.
You taught me that leadership is everywhere if I stay present enough to see it. It’s in the coach who inspires belief when defeat feels inevitable. It’s in the executive who chooses trust over control. It’s in the educator who pours their soul into shaping young minds. It’s in the parents who juggle endless responsibilities and quietly instill values and courage in the next generation.
2024, you weren’t easy on me. You brought trials that forced me to look deeper for the sacred testimonies, to confront the parts of myself I’d rather ignore and run from. But you also brought moments of deeper clarity—those rare flashes of understanding where I saw what truly matters: connection, purpose, community, health, and the courage to keep going.
You’ve taught me that the lows don’t define me—they refine me. The highs don’t complete me—they remind me what I’m capable of. That a closed door is not rejection but divine protection. That life—and leadership—is messy yet beautiful when we step back, be still, and go inward for validation. And through it all, you showed me that leadership is less about what I do and more about who I choose to be.
So, as I say goodbye to you, I do so with gratitude and in gratitude—not for how easy you made things, but for how deeply you made me feel, grow, evolve, learn, and transform. Your lessons will linger far beyond your calendar days. They will shape how I lead, love, and live in the days ahead.
Thank you for every moment that brought me to my knees and every moment that lifted me to my feet. I’m ready now—not because I have it all figured out, but because you’ve shown me that leadership and life are about taking that step forward anyway and trusting in what is.
With resolve, reflection, and an open heart, Thank you, 2024!
