Don't Give A...

Never compromise your truth, your story, and personal growth to be validated and accepted. You were born to be a voice, not merely an echo!

“One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.”

— Sigmund Freud, Austrian Neurologist

It is human nature to care deeply. When we put our notions of fortune, fame, happiness, and success aside and get to the core of humanity, it all seems like this constant search and discovery to feel recognized, accepted, valued, appreciated, and loved. You joining The Daily Coach community indicates the importance of your holistic growth and professional development to you and that's remarkable. However, there are times in life when caring too deeply has unforeseen pitfalls. Because we can care so much and events in life matter significantly, the first sign of criticism or adversity can sometimes destroy our enthusiasm and sabotage our minds. This theme of not caring so deeply was one of the inspirations for New York Times bestselling author Mark Manson to write and share his story.

Manson graduated from Boston University in 2007. After college, he started an online business, blogging, and traveling the world while writing about his experiences. His first book, Models: Attract Women Through Honesty, was self-published in 2011 and sold well. But his second book published in 2016, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life, became a huge hit, selling well over six million copies globally to date.

This book is not about flipping everyone the bird, or building enemies at every stop. It's about finding something meaningful in your life while investing your time and energy into cultivating that craft. It's about letting go of thoughts, habits, and environments that are no longer serving you while caring less about the things that do not align with your values and most authentic self. Manson believes the key to a great life is not a bigger home or garage filled with cars. Instead, it's about wanting less, reducing the things that matter, the vitalness of our core values, and focusing on the immediate action and next step to move our lives forward.

One of life's biggest challenges is to differentiate between what the world expects of you and what you expect of yourself. We live in a society of instant gratification that offers an infinite amount of possibilities, which can be rewarding yet also destructive. If we are not mindful, this need for more can leave us feeling that we never measure up. With everything possible at our reach, we tend to lose focus on what is most important, while equating busyness to productivity. Understand, less is more, and when people have less, they tend to focus more creatively, spending energy and time on discovering a solution with strategy.

Mark Manson has three beliefs:

  1. Become indifferent. Become comfortable being different than everyone else. As Coach Bill Walsh once said, "If we are all thinking alike, no one is thinking."

  2. Adversity is your friend. Love it, cherish the battles, and know with determination and focus, as well as not taking other people's opinions personally you can achieve and succeed.

  3. Don't believe any comments, good or bad. Focus on your standards, on your level of self-acceptance while being the best version of yourself.

Each day brings new challenges but also unique opportunities to discover the outer depths of who you genuinely are. Know that happiness is your innate birthright. Someday choosing to be happy and grateful for life is not a day in the week. It is today. Live a life of service, integrity, love, and grace while becoming less concerned about what others think about you and more focused on how you feel about yourself. Never compromise your truth, your story, and personal growth to be validated and accepted. You were born to be a voice, not merely an echo!
