More Than a Game

Hard work may not guarantee victory, but it does forge the will and grit needed to weather the storms and emerge stronger on the other side.

As the echoes of cheers and the remnants of blue and maize confetti settle on another college football season, the lessons on the gridiron continue to resonate and transcend the boundaries of the playing field.

In the aftermath of his team's Orange Bowl loss to the Georgia Bulldogs, Florida State Coach Mike Norvell delivered a powerful post-game message, offering profound insights applicable to the boardroom and the intricate game of life.

Coach Norvell's words echo a universal truth: We as leaders are not just tasked with guiding our teams to victory; we are in the business of transforming lives.

"Whatever the reason, why things happen, I don't know all the time," Norvell said to his players in a moment of reflection. "And neither will you. Because in life, there's a lot of things you cannot explain, you cannot put your finger on. But ultimately, you're always going to have a choice."

Norvell encapsulated a fundamental truth of leadership – the inevitability of facing the unknown and the unpredictable.

Life, much like football, throws unexpected challenges at us.

But within these obstacles lies the power to persevere, to adapt and to lead with deeper resilience and humility.

"I've told you since the very first day that I came here: Hard work does not guarantee success. It doesn't. And it never will,” Norvell said. “But that absolutely will put you in the best position to be able to achieve it."

The path to success is fraught with obstacles, and hard work is the compass that guides us through the journey.

It may not guarantee victory, but it forges the will and grit needed to weather the storms and emerge stronger on the other side.

Coach Norvell's post-game message reached its crescendo with a powerful acknowledgment of his team's character and resilience that we’d all be wise to reflect on:

"And the work that you put in, the decision that you made, just to say yes. Because you know what? It's really easy when things don't go well, and you hurt, and you're angry and you're sad ... the easiest thing to do is to pull back and stop.

“That's what the world wants you to do. But there's only a select-few people who are willing to freaking fight. And I am grateful for you. I'm grateful for what you've done. I'm grateful for who you are."

Whether on the football field or in the challenges of our personal or professional lives, the choice to persist, to fight and to overcome is what sets us apart as leaders.

As we navigate our teams and ourselves through the first quarter of 2024, let’s embrace the power of our choices and the resilience born from devoting ourselves to the process.

Beyond the scoreboard or the bottom line, we’re in the business of shaping lives – while cultivating legacies defined by the strength to fight, the courage to endure, and the commitment to transform both ourselves and those we lead.

On handling success: There's no such thing as a championship returning team. Their experiences are important, but the next year is a new chapter. Every year is different. It needs to be different and needs to be written differently, even if it's the same team. You don't start in the middle of the mountain just because you finished at the top last year.
