Happy Birthday, Muhammad Ali: Lessons The People's Champ Taught The World

Ali was more than an athlete. He provided hope, light, love, and access for communities to share their own stories.

“Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

— Muhammad Ali

Today, we celebrate the 78th birthday of Muhammad Ali, whose championship spirit is still vibrant even decades after his dominance in the ring. Ali transcended not just sports but culture, politics, and race as well by challenging the status quo and motivating society to re-examine its own shortcomings. He embodied what it meant to be authentically human. While many have strived to replicate his grace, compassion, and charisma, there will forever be only one People’s Champ.

The following are 5 life lessons he taught us:

Self-Love

Ali taught humanity the power of self-love. He gave people hope and emphasized being confident in your own uniqueness. He was a beacon of inspiration, courage, and grit during a period of sweltering injustice and prejudice. Ali taught us that the human mind is powerful beyond measure — and that another person’s inability to see your value was not really a reflection of you, but of that person’s limited consciousness.

Live in Truth

Ali taught us the power of embracing the authentic self. He challenged the status quo and didn’t allow naysayers and constant threats to deter him from excelling. He remained true to who he was regardless of circumstances, thus liberating himself and providing a haven of faith to his followers at the same time.

Find Your Voice

Ali taught us to reflect on who we are as individuals and to make it our life mission to master our craft while serving others. Your voice is valuable regardless of your title, and you should always speak up in the face of injustice.

Servant Leadership

Ali reminded us, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.” Throughout his life, Ali consistently demonstrated compassion and tenderness. He showed us that life is not about how much you can acquire, but how much you can give. Remember, a genuine smile alone can have a profound impact on another person’s day.

Never Give Up

Throughout Ali’s entire life, he displayed a never-give-up mentality. He was obsessed with greatness and allergic to mediocrity. The fact that Ali’s heart continued to beat 30 minutes after his other organs had failed on June 3, 2016, is a testament to his stellar strength and his willpower to defy the odds.

In our current times of worldly unrest and systemic injustices, we can all learn something from how Muhammad Ali lived and served. He not only disrupted the world through his greatness, he empowered it. Ali was more than an athleteHe provided hope, light, love, and access for communities to share their own stories. To The People’s Champ, Happy Birthday!
