3 Leadership Lessons from Tom Brady and Jay-Z
When our team members feel valued and understand their larger roles in the organization, we prevent the formation of silo cultures.
A pair of legends in their respective crafts recently shared some invaluable wisdom with NFL rookies, including No. 1 pick Caleb Williams.
At an exclusive event hosted by Fanatics founder and CEO Michael Rubin, Tom Brady and Jay-Z provided three critical lessons on selflessness and perseverance — and they’re relevant to any leader:
1. The Power of "We" over "Me"
"The biggest problem I see with a lot of the young players today, you guys are making it too much about 'I' and 'me' because of social media, branding and all that," said Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion.
"It's fine. You're not gonna win. There was a difference between being a star and being a champion."
Brady's Hall-of-Fame career wasn't built on his skills alone but on the synergy, sacrifices, buy-in and dedication of the teams he played on.
As leaders, we should prioritize collective goals and team success over personal accolades. When our team members feel valued and understand their roles in the organization, we prevent the formation of silo cultures, negatively impacting the unity and cohesion in the building.
2. Stacking the days: The journey to high-performance
Brady also highlighted the concept of "stacking the days" to achieve sustained high performance.
"Every day of practice is important,” he said. “You know why? Because when I was on the Patriots and we had 20 years of winning, every day was a big day. I treated a preseason game, I treated a regular season game like it was a Super Bowl so when I got to the Super Bowl, it was just another day for me."
Often, we claim we want to achieve greatness and reach specific goals, but our daily habits don't align with these aspirations. We need to regularly check in with ourselves and those we lead, asking how badly do we want the things we say we do? What are we willing to sacrifice to get them?
Achieving mastery begins with a single good day.
3. The obstacle is the way
Jay-Z, a 24-time Grammy Award-winner, emphasized the importance of resilience.
"You gotta know who you are 'cause those moments gonna come. You gonna be down 28-0, and you gotta say, 'All right, I know who I am. I'mma go get it.'"
His message highlights the need for self-awareness and inner poise as we overcome obstacles. The better we know ourselves, the better position we put ourselves in to navigate adversity.
So, how can we go about applying these lessons as leaders:
Prioritize the Team: Cultivate a culture where the team's success is the main thing. Celebrate team achievements and ensure every member knows their role and importance to the vision.
Embrace Consistency: Approach each day with a relentless pursuit to get better in some way. Consistency compounds, yet we have to start with one day.
Develop Resilience: Putting ourselves and our teams in uncomfortable situations before we are uncomfortable can be a key to strengthening our self-awareness and building our capacity to handle adversity.
Realize, today, we have a unique opportunity to prioritize “we" over “me" and begin stacking the days.
Brady and Jay-Z continue to provide the playbook and blueprint on how to win in the game of leadership and life.
