Level 5 Leadership: The Journey from Good to Great

The real question is whether you have the resolve and resilience to become a more effective and transformational leader.

Leadership isn’t something you can opt out of. Whether you realize it or not, you are leading in some facet of your life.

The question isn’t if you're a leader — it’s whether you're an effective one.

This brings us to a bigger question: Can the highest form of leadership, Level 5 Leadership, be developed?

In business expert Jim Collins' book Good to Great, he identifies five distinct levels of leadership. While most people stop or plateau at Level 4, leaders who reach the pinnacle of Level 5 have a unique blend of personal humility and indomitable will.

They aren’t just about achieving goals; they’re relentlessly focused on a cause larger than themselves. Their ambition is deeply tied to the organization, the team, the mission, and the people they serve.

  • Level 1: Highly Capable Individual ― Makes productive contributions through talent, knowledge, skills and good work habits.

  • Level 2: Contributing Team Member ― Contributes to the achievement of group objectives; works effectively with others in a group setting.

  • Level 3: Competent Manager ― Organizes people and resources toward the effective and efficient pursuit of pre-determined objectives.

  • Level 4: Effective Leader  ― Catalyzes commitment to and vigorous pursuit of a clear and compelling vision; stimulates the group to high performance standards.

  • Level 5: Executive Leadership  ― Builds enduring greatness through a paradoxical combination of personal humility plus professional will.

Whether you’re at the beginning of your leadership journey or already climbing the ladder, consider these questions:

  • Where do you currently stand in the hierarchy?

  • What steps can you take to evolve and level up?

  • Are you prepared to channel your personal ambitions into something greater than yourself?

  • Can you cultivate humility alongside your drive for success?

Leadership is not about reaching a destination; it’s about evolving. Whether you are at Level 1 or nearing Level 5, each stage presents a unique opportunity to reflect, learn and improve.

The question isn’t just whether leadership can be learned. The real question is whether you have the resolve and resilience to become a more effective and transformational leader — and reach Level 5.
