Quarterback Jayden Daniels has taken the NFL by storm, producing historic numbers and moments during his rookie season. This past Saturday night, he led the Washington Commanders to a 45–31 victory over the top-seeded Detroit Lions, securing the team’s first NFC Championship appearance since 1991.
His performance on the biggest stage of his early career—22 completions on 31 attempts, 299 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 122.9 passer rating—was a masterclass in poise and execution. Beyond the statistics, Daniels' composure at just 24 years old has been a defining trait throughout the season. He attributes his success to a combination of faith, preparation, a genuine love for the game, and an unrelenting commitment to improving his craft.
One of Daniels’ secret weapons is a cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) platform from the German company Cognilize. He adopted VR technology during his final season at LSU, after stints at Arizona State, and the results were staggering. His growth and production helped him win the prestigious Heisman Trophy and ultimately become the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Originally designed for elite soccer players, the VR system enables Daniels to experience fast-paced, game-like scenarios without the physical strain of traditional practice. Every morning at 6 a.m., Daniels immerses himself in VR simulations set to speeds faster than real-life gameplay. This accelerated pace trains his mind to anticipate plays and process situations more quickly than his opponents.
“The first time I put it on, I backed into the wall,” said Kliff Kingsbury, the Commanders’ offensive coordinator. “It felt like the [pass] rush was coming.”
By the time game day arrives, Daniels has already “seen” close to every possible scenario in high-speed simulations.“Once you get out there, everything slows down,” Daniels explained. “I know this is coming. I’ve seen this before, [and] it moved more than 20 times faster in VR.”
Daniels’ journey raises critical questions for us as leaders in any field:
What are you willing to do to achieve excellence and mastery in your craft?
With the resources and relationships available, how can you better equip and prepare those under your care to excel in their roles?
Here are four actionable takeaways from Daniels’ approach:
Embrace Innovation: Don’t be afraid to try new tools and technologies. Daniels’ use of VR highlights how embracing innovation can provide a competitive edge and accelerate growth.
Be Open to New Ideas: Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has embraced leveraging technology by uploading play calls and schemes into Daniels’ VR system for review. It’s not about the mentality “We’ve always done it this way,” but rather, “Let’s partner together and find what works best for how you learn and prepare.”
Prioritize Mental Reps: Mental preparation is just as important as physical practice. Daniels trains his mind to operate at peak performance, ensuring he’s mentally ready for both the opponent and the moment.
Find Joy in the Process: Daniels thrives on the fun of the game. When we find joy in our work—and help our teams do the same—we foster greater connection, buy-in, and grit.
Jayden Daniels’ remarkable rookie season is more than just a tale of big-time plays in pivotal moments. It’s a testament to the power of preparation, faith, and the courage to explore new paths in the pursuit of mastery.
Regardless of our title or craft, we can all draw inspiration from Daniels’ leadership. Greatness isn’t just about talent—it’s about maximizing tools, time, and opportunities to create a lasting competitive edge.
