"Notes" of An Elder ― 10 Steps to Living More Fully Right Now
In the end, we won't be remembered for the years we lived, but for what we did with those years.
Since September 2020, our Friday editions of The Daily Coach have featured “Notes” of An Elder—a repository of pertinent information, knowledge, and wisdom from our co-founder, "Coach" George Raveling, who is now 87.
You can read last week's edition here.
As Coach Raveling prepares for the release of his upcoming book, What You're Made For, on March 4—co-authored with his friend, bestselling author and philosopher Ryan Holiday—we wanted to give The Daily Coach audience an exclusive inside look at some of the stories and lessons shared in the book.
Over the next four weeks of “Notes” of An Elder, this series will provide you with firsthand access to What You're Made For. We hope you enjoy the journey with us and continue to confront the whys of your existence, to question what it means to live a life of intention and meaning, and to ask: What was I made for?
Without further ado, let’s dive into the timely words and timeless wisdom of What You're Made For: Powerful Life Lessons from My Career in Sports from our friend, our mentor, our co-founder, and our Coach—George Raveling.

To those reading this, I want to leave you with this message: Your life is a gift. It's an opportunity to make a difference, to leave the world a little better than you found it. Don't wait for some future moment to start living with purpose. Start today.
Here are some steps you can take right now to live more fully:
Reflect on your values: What matters most to you? What do you want your life to stand for?
Set meaningful goals: Not just career goals, but personal growth goals. How do you want to improve as a person?
Practice gratitude: Take time each day to appreciate the good in your life.
Serve others: Look for ways to make a positive impact on those around you.
Keep learning: Read widely, seek out new experiences, stay curious about the world.
Build relationships: Invest time and energy in the people who matter to you.
Take care of yourself: Your physical and mental health are crucial to living a full life.
Embrace challenges: See difficulties as opportunities for growth.
Live with integrity: Let your actions align with your values.
Leave a legacy: Think about how you want to be remembered and start living that way now.
As for me, I hope my legacy will be one of inspiration and impact. I want to be remembered not just as a successful coach or executive, but as someone who uplifted others, who fought for equality and opportunity, who never stopped learning and growing.
I want future generations to look at my life and see that it's possible to overcome adversity, to reinvent yourself at any age, to make a difference no matter where you come from.
But more than that, I hope my story encourages others to live their own lives to the fullest. To embrace their unique gifts and use them to make the world a better place. To understand that every day is an opportunity to learn, to grow, to love, to serve.
In the end, we won't be remembered for the years we lived, but for what we did with those years.
We won't be measured by metrics like wins and losses or successes and failures, but by questions like:
Was he a good person?
Was she kind?
Did he make a positive difference on the people around him?
Did she pursue her unique path with courage and resilience?
Were they a person of integrity? Someone who kept their word?
Someone who told the truth? Someone you could trust?
Did they leave this place a little better than they found it?
Did they really live?
Make sure you do. Make sure you live with purpose. With excitement and hope and the understanding and the appreciation that every day is an opportunity―to make a positive difference and to be alive.
