"Notes" of An Elder ― 3.21.25

Our response is always within our control. Silence speaks volumes, and 'No' is a complete sentence.

Nothing in life is of any value unless it is shared with others.

"Notes" of An Elder is a depository of pertinent information, knowledge and wisdom. Available weekly will be an elder's "thinking menu" for your use. Enjoy this bounty.

  • If someone controls your mind, they can control your body.

  • When things fall apart, we’re left with a choice: Will we use the obstacle to find a way forward, or will we let it become an excuse?

  • There is profound beauty in the losses we encounter in life and leadership—if we allow ourselves to stay present in the pain and discomfort, embracing the lessons they reveal.

  • Self-leadership and self-discipline have been foundational cornerstones of personal transformation.

  • Our response is always within our control. Silence speaks volumes, and “No” is a complete sentence.

  • In a world that often glorifies perfection, it's essential to recognize and embrace the inherent beauty found in life's imperfections.

Doing Great Things Starts with Culture

A lot of times people don’t do great things because it’s not really expected of them and nobody demands they try.

Nobody says “Hey that’s the culture here, to do great things."

If you set that up, people will do things that are greater than they ever thought they could.

  • Too often, we fail to trust ourselves and our own story, which limits our ability to trust others and to lead effectively.

  • Great books and masterful storytellers have a unique way of infusing life with depth, meaning, and imagination.

  • Loss and transitions are inevitable—often unsettling, yet rich with perspective. Embracing them helps us uncover deeper meaning in who we are and what we’re made for.

  •  Let go of the notion that there's an expiration date for your dreams and aspirations. Age is merely a number, and the passage of time should not dictate the pursuit of your passions, greater purpose and higher calling.

  • It's important to develop a mindset that values progress over perfection.
