Olympic Lessons: Cultivating Excellence in Leadership and Life
Greatness will always require a level of sweat equity ― embracing challenges, confronting resistance, and committing to continuous growth.
As the Olympic Games in Paris intensify, it’s hard not to marvel at the elite talent, discipline and high performance on display. Millions around the globe watch in awe, inspired by athletes who have dedicated countless hours and years to training, often far from any bright lights or roaring crowds.
Miyamoto Musashi, a renowned swordsman, once said, "The purpose of today’s training is to defeat yesterday’s understanding."
While we may not be representing our country or vying for medals, each of us is competing against ourselves to discover and cultivate excellence in our lives and leadership.
Here are some mental strategies shared recently by mental performance, resilience, and leadership coach AJ on X that we can leverage to cultivate excellence and self-mastery for ourselves and our teams:
Continuous Improvement: Always striving to give your best and compete. It means embracing a growth mindset and looking for ways to improve.
Resilience: Bouncing back stronger from setbacks. It's about seeing failures as opportunities to learn and grow.
Focus: It means prioritizing what matters. Focus on what you can control and eliminate distractions that don't align with your goals.
Self-discipline: Consistently doing the work and showing up. It means having the self-control to persevere, even when it's tough.
Positive Attitude: It means facing challenges with optimism. Believe in the possibility of success, even in tough situations.
Accountability: Own your actions and results. It means take responsibility for your successes and failures, and learn from them.
Passion: Have energy and enthusiasm for what you do. Look to be driven by intrinsic motivation and a commitment to your pursuits.
In both sports and leadership, greatness will always require a relentless, often thankless, pursuit. Remember, excellence is a mindset, not a destination. It will always require a level of sweat equity ― embracing challenges, confronting resistance, and committing to continuous growth, especially on the days when our minds and bodies tell us to quit.
As we admire the feats of these athletes, we can draw inspiration from their example. Whether it’s in a Gold Medal round or in the boardroom, excellence requires us to compete, to be disciplined — and to always choose resilience.
