Sacred Leadership: Coach Kim Caldwell Returns to Sidelines Just One Week After Birth
Leadership isn’t about perfection—or even about winning trophies. It’s about presence, showing up, and making sure people know you care.

It’s a headline that makes you stop in your tracks: Lady Vols coach Kim Caldwell returns one week after giving birth to her son.
For most, the immediate questions arise: How? Why? What fueled her decision? But beneath these questions lies a much deeper reflection—a testament to the sacredness of leadership and the extraordinary strength, courage, and resilience of women.
In her first season leading the program, University of Tennessee women’s basketball head coach Kim Caldwell returned to the sidelines just one week after giving birth to her first child, Conor Scott, despite battling the flu during delivery.
Entering the court before Tennessee’s big matchup against No. 2-ranked South Carolina on Monday night, Caldwell was greeted with a standing ovation from over 12,000 fans. That ovation wasn’t just for her—it was for what she represents: the power of purpose and the strength of the human spirit.
Reflecting on her return, Caldwell said, “I tried to sneak in. I wanted to go unnoticed.”
But sometimes, courage like hers cannot—and should not—go unnoticed.

South Carolina coach Dawn Staley captured the sentiment perfectly: "Women have the strength of 10 men."
Staley praised Caldwell’s decision to return, acknowledging the difficult balance women in leadership often face: “When you’re a coach that really wants to hang another banner, it comes with a sacrifice... Women have to make decisions like that, and when they do, I feel like other women should honor them and let them know we see you.”
And we do see her. Caldwell’s return wasn’t just about basketball—it was a statement about commitment, priorities, and the complex interplay between personal and professional responsibilities.
Coach Caldwell’s leadership carries the weight of a profound legacy. At the helm of the Lady Vols program, she walks in the footsteps of coaching legend Pat Summitt, who instilled principles like "Put the team before yourself." Caldwell embodies this principle, showing up for her team at a time when everyone would have understood if she stepped away.
Caldwell admitted to having postpartum restrictions: “It was hard for me to yell,” she said. “My players and my staff helped me with the yelling.”
Still, her presence—her showing up—was a powerful message to her team.
“I love my team,” she said. “I ask a lot of them. I made sure I would give my best to them.”
Caldwell’s story is a reminder that 'courage doesn’t always roar.' Sometimes, it’s found in the quiet but unwavering determination to show up for those we love and care for. It’s in the decision to say, “I’m here, and I’ve got you too.”
For leaders, educators, coaches, executives and high performers, Coach Caldwell’s journey is a call to reflect on our own commitments. It asks us to consider the sacrifices we make for our teams, our families, our friends and our higher calling—and the resilience it takes to keep showing up even when the circumstances are far from ideal.
Coach Caldwell’s return is not just a sports story. It’s a life story, a leadership story, a parenthood story and a love story. It’s about navigating the demands of a high-performance environment while embracing the miracle of life. It’s about acknowledging and honoring the sacrifices and decisions women make every day to dare bravely, to lead, to nurture, to empower and to inspire.
From all of us at The Daily Coach, we celebrate Coach Caldwell’s extraordinary courage, strength, and grace. We honor the addition of her son, Conor, to her family and extend our best wishes to her, her husband Justin, and the Lady Vols program for continued excellence—both on the court and in the game of life.
Leadership isn’t about perfection—or even about winning trophies. It’s about presence, showing up, and making sure people know you care.
Take a moment to reflect: What does it mean to show up in courage and honor my sacred power?
Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is simply say, 'I’m here. I believe in you. How can I help and be of service?'—and then show it through our actions.
