Self-Leadership in Times of Uncertainty

We must lead from a place of courage and truth, not fear and lies.

“The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it.”

― David W. Orr, Ecological Literacy: Educating Our Children for a Sustainable World

Our humanity is dealing with unprecedented times. But the unrest presents an opportune moment for all of us to step forward as courageous and servant leaders. We must lead from a place of courage and truth, not fear and lies. Self-leadership and self-discipline are more critical in our lives than ever.

The coming days, weeks, and months will be filled with many “stop and think” moments. Trying to please everybody is a recipe for overcompensation. There is not a fixed ratio between yes and no and must be based on the unique context of the situation. Listen to your intuition, body, and mind while deeply understanding that “No” is a sentence. By saying no at times, we reclaim our time, energy, and life.

Life will present its fair share of adversity and experiences outside of our control. However, every day we can choose to overcome those setbacks. Each day we can deliberately control our attitude, behavior, mindset, and how we react to life's trials. It costs us nothing to be kind and to demonstrate greater levels of daily patience and empathy.

One of the most profound things about humankind is our capacity to heal, grow, survive, and thrive in times of immense uncertainty. Combating change and leading with strategy will always require new ways of thinking, executing, and learning while continually focusing on where we are and where we want to go as individuals and as a community. If we want to travel fast, we will travel alone. But if we want to travel far, it is vital we travel together.

When we reflect on the many breaths of life we take every day, the beauty of that act alone is a miracle in itself. Through it all, we must remind ourselves to breathe deeply and to practice mindfulness. Breathe in the love and gratitude that permeates our living while exhaling any fear and anxiety surrounding this present moment. This too shall pass. Truth and teamwork will be our saving grace and guiding compass.
