Shortcut or Journey? The Leadership Dilemma
By resisting the allure of shortcuts and embracing the journey, we put ourselves in a better position to be more resilient as leaders.
In our increasingly dopamine-driven culture, the need for instant gratification has permeated just about every sector of society.
We're often lured by the promise of quick results, bypassing the journey and process that are integral parts of any meaningful endeavor or behavior change.
Sometimes, the shortcut ends up being the longest route.
When we opt for these, we're not just taking a detour from the path; we're also cheating ourselves out of valuable experiences, lessons and unique growth opportunities.
Whether cutting corners on decision-making processes, sacrificing long-term strategy for short-term gains, or bypassing essential steps in team development, shortcuts can undermine the integrity and foundation of effective and transformational leadership.
So, how can we resist the temptation of shortcuts and embrace more of the journey?
1. Cultivate Patience: As the saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither are great achievements and leaders. Recognize that meaningful progress takes time and effort. Cultivate patience as a virtue, understanding that the journey is as important as the destination.
2. Focus on the Process: Shift your perspective from the end goal to the steps you need to take to get there. Break down your objectives into manageable tasks and relish each small victory along the way. Remember, the process is the prize and where growth and learning blossom.
3. Value Learning Over Outcome: Instead of fixating solely on the end result, prioritize the lessons and insights gained throughout the journey. Focusing rigidly on the outcome takes away from the work. Every setback, every challenge, is an opportunity to learn, adapt, and evolve as a leader.
4. Lead by Example: As a leader, our actions should speak louder than our words. Demonstrate your commitment to the journey by modeling patience, perseverance, and dedication. Encourage others to embrace the process and resist the temptation of shortcuts.
5. Celebrate Milestones: While the journey may be arduous and there may be unknowns at times, it's essential to celebrate milestones along the way. Acknowledge the progress made — no matter how small — and use these moments to reinvigorate your team's motivation, buy-in and stay-in.
The path to sustained high performance is rarely linear. Behavior change and committing to lifestyle habits are marked by twists and turns, setbacks and triumphs.
By resisting the allure of shortcuts and embracing the journey, we put ourselves in a better position to be more resilient and empathetic as leaders.
The next time you're tempted to take the shortcut in your personal or professional life, remember: Sometimes, the longest route home is the one worth taking.
