Sunday Thinking

The past has taught me many things, I embrace it. The future holds many possibilities, I seek them. Today I live with honest presence in this moment.

“When your sense of self and happiness comes from within and isn't a roller coaster ride dependent on others or circumstances, you approach life differently. You make better choices. You draw to you the people and situations that matter. The others, they fall away.”

Kamal Ravikant, Live Your Truth

I. Needs of the Human Mind

  • Safety + Order

  • Information + Love

  • Praise + Reassurance

  • Validation + Warmth

“With every act of self-care your authentic self gets stronger, and the critical, fearful mind gets weaker. Every act of self-care is a powerful declaration: I am on my side, I am on my side, each day I am more and more on my own side.” — Susan Weiss Berry

II. How Do We Want to be Remembered?

  • Money comes and goes. Kindness lives on forever.

  • Titles come and go. Empathy lives on forever.

  • Appearances come and go. Generosity lives on forever.

  • Social Media comes and goes. Integrity lives on forever.

  • Degrees come and go. Honesty lives on forever.

The eulogy is the foundational document of our legacy, of how people remember us, of how we live on in the minds and hearts of others. So the question is: Why do we spend so much time on what our eulogy is not going to be?

III. Lifelong Learning & Unlearning

Life lessons most people take a lifetime to learn:

  • Sometimes your old life has to fall apart before your new life can fall together.

  • The job, the party, the relationship — knowing when to leave is so important.

  • Stop expecting honesty from people who lie to themselves.

  • At any minute, someone can come along and change your life. That person is you.

The Last Words…

“Eulogies aren't résumés… they describe the person's care, wisdom, truthfulness and courage. They describe the million little moral judgments that emanate from that inner region.”

— David Brooks, The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life
