“We need leaders not in love with money but in love with justice. Not in love with publicity but in love with humanity. Leaders who can subject their particular egos to the pressing urgencies of the great cause of freedom…..a time like this demands great leaders.”

― Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 50th Anniversary Celebration of Alpha Phi Alpha (1956)

I. We are All Dream Makers

We share a common bond. We are all dreamers. Much like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we have a dream. We are never too young to dream and never too old to pursue those dreams.  Here are six gentle reminders, to cultivate and live our dreams:

  1. See It: Some people dream of things that never were and ask why? We must dream of things that never were and ask why not?

  2. Feel It: Dare to dream the impossible dream. Dare to stand out in the crowd. Dare to think different and be different.

  3. Believe It: Doors of opportunities are opened for those who genuinely believe in their dreams and themselves.

  4. Plan It: A dream without a plan and a deadline are nothing more than a wish.

  5. Live It: The last thing any of us want to do is to die with our dreams still inside of us.

  6. Be It: There is no duplication of you.

II. Now Is The Time

  • To listen to learn.

  • To stop and think.

  • To lead and follow.

  • To trust and respect.

  • To be humble and hungry.

  • To be kind and thoughtful.

  • To be responsible and accountable.

  • To be uncommon and part of the solution.

III. 10 Disciplines of a Learner

  1. Speaks up.

  2. Takes risks.

  3. Asks questions.

  4. Perseveres in tasks.

  5. Welcomes a challenge.

  6. Builds on other people’s ideas.

  7. Takes criticism constructively.

  8. Listens with an openness to change.

  9. Uses mistakes as learning opportunities.

  10. Decides when to lead and when to follow.

V. This Week I Will

  2. Dream.

  3. Focus on WE over ME.

  4. Seek and speak the truth.

  5. View obstacles as opportunities.

The Last Words…

“When you consciously slow down and deepen your breath, you are letting your body know that it’s okay to trust this present moment.”

― Yumi Sakugawa, Artist

P.S. Searching for a book recommendation? Our team at The Daily Coach highly recommends The Seminarian: Martin Luther King Jr. Comes of Age by Patrick Parr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a cautious nineteen-year-old rookie preacher when he left Atlanta, Georgia, to attend divinity school up north. Based on dozens of revealing interviews with the men and women who knew him then, The Seminarian is the first definitive, full-length account of King's years as a divinity student at Crozer Theological Seminary. Long passed over by biographers and historians, this period in King's life is vital to understanding the historical figure he soon became.
