Thank You

When a reporter asked him to pick his greatest achievement over his illustrious career, Branch Rickey paused for a moment, then answered, "It hasn't happened yet."

As Branch Rickey sat at his farewell press conference in 1955, relieved of his duties as general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, most assumed his baseball career was over.

Rickey had forever changed the sport. He was 77 years old and had helped break baseball’s color barrier, signing Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Rickey also invented the batting helmet, the batting cage, pitching machines, some critical stats and baseball's farm system. He had been successful at just about everything he had tried, and as he sat in front of the media, he had nothing to be ashamed about even though he was unable to change the Pirates’ fortunes.

Rickey, wearing his traditional bow tie, was friendly and gracious with his answers. When a reporter asked him to pick his greatest achievement over his illustrious career, Rickey paused for a moment, then answered, "It hasn't happened yet."

Imagine being that age having accomplished so much and still having that level of optimism, curiosity and humbleness.

Today, The Daily Coach turns 2 years old. We’ve written every day these past 24 months and are fortunate to have connected with so many of you. We are honored to have been able to develop a strong, devoted following. But we, like Rickey, feel our proudest moments lie ahead.

And know that the best “hasn’t happened yet.”
