The Leadership Lesson in Winnie the Pooh’s Enchanted Forest

The enchanted forest is a state of mind rooted in joy, curiosity, playfulness and connection. As leaders, it challenges us to rethink and redefine what truly matters.

As leaders, decision-makers, and high performers, we often find ourselves swept up in the relentless pursuit of success. We pride ourselves on our drive, ambition, and ability to shoulder responsibility.

But what if, in this tireless chase, we lose sight of what truly matters?

Dr. Gabor Maté—a renowned speaker, bestselling author, and expert on addiction, stress, and childhood development—shared a profound truth during his conversation with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee on the Feel Better, Live More podcast. In a deeply reflective discussion, Maté offered insights that resonate far beyond his own experiences, touching on a universal challenge many of us face daily.

When asked if he would choose to live his life over again, Dr. Maté’s response was profoundly human and emotionally resonant:

“If I were to choose to live my life over again, I wouldn’t live it in this way. Do you know Winnie the Pooh?" he asked Dr. Chatterjee.

"The end of that book would bring tears to my eyes for years. Christopher Robin, the little boy, now has to go to school, and he’s telling his friends—the toy animals—that he won’t be able to play with them so much anymore.

What I wasn’t aware of when I went to medical school and later as a physician for decades was how driven I was to justify my existence in the world. I worked too hard. When you’re driven to work too hard, you actually ignore what matters. People sacrifice their playfulness and joyfulness for the sake of being accepted and being successful.

We can all be Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin. We can always keep playing in the enchanted forest. That’s just essential, I think.”

As leaders, we often live under the illusion that our worth is measured by our output, title, or accolades. Dr. Maté’s reflection invites us to pause and ask: Are we sacrificing the joy and richness of life in the name of proving ourselves?

It's easy to become consumed meeting external expectations, often losing touch with our inner Christopher Robin. In doing so, we leave behind the playful, creative, and connected parts of ourselves that once thrived in our personal enchanted forest. Instead, we become immersed in a world that prioritizes productivity over presence and results over relationships.

Dr. Maté’s metaphor of the enchanted forest serves as a poignant reminder of what we sacrifice when ambition takes precedence over authenticity. Yet, here's the encouraging truth: we can always find our way back.

The enchanted forest is a state of mind rooted in joy, curiosity, playfulness and connection. As leaders, it challenges us to rethink and redefine what truly matters.

Dr. Maté’s regret is a powerful call to action for us to reassess our own stories, behavior, and holistic priorities. Take a moment to reflect:

  • What drives me? Is it a genuine passion for what I do, or a need to prove my worth to others?

  • What am I sacrificing? Am I unintentionally neglecting my joy, playfulness, or relationships?

  • How can I return to my enchanted forest? What practices, habits, or connections can help me rediscover the magic I once knew?

As we reflect on Dr. Maté’s words and the enchanting world of Winnie the Pooh, remember: The enchanted forest isn’t lost—it’s waiting. Step off the treadmill of proving your worth and lean into presence, playfulness, joy, and connection.

In the words of Christopher Robin: “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."

Trust that stepping into your enchanted forest will lead to a richer, more meaningful life—not just for you, but for everyone you lead.
