Time Is Not the Enemy

J.K. Rowling was able to push through her adversity, using 3 main tactics that now apply to our lives as well.

Imagine having a lifetime ambition of becoming a great novelist, then having outside events prevent you from reaching that dream? We all envision the life we want, but there are times where both internal and external circumstances keep us from pursuing it. No one planned on us being quarantined, no one expected our lives to be turned upside down; yet, here we are facing this pandemic, which might be preventing us from meeting our dreams.

Hardships are just part of life, and no one is immune to facing adversity. How we deal with adversity is what separates many of us. For example, Harry Potter creator and world-famous author J.K. Rowling always wanted to be a great novelist. It was her dream and her passion, but when she found herself trying to raise a child as a single mother, life became more complicated than she expected. She had a mouth to feed and needed to work, which afforded her little or no time to sit in front of the typewriter and create. The hardships of life threatened her dreams.

The greatest test we all face is "time" — dealing with large amounts of it, not knowing if we are making any progress toward the finish line. Being a struggling writer can be a lonely life because until your book faces the world, you have no idea if anyone will find it exciting or engaging. You get no feedback; you work alone with the same daily routine, which begs the question we are all asking ourselves now: How long can we endure? How long can we face tough days, with little or no results, yet still awake in the morning to repeat the process? Will we become frustrated, give in, or even give up? Some might be facing internal struggles, dealing with bouts of depression and anxiety over the long-term effects. If so, then seek someone to help.  We are not alone in this fight, we are not alone in dealing with this hardship — together we can prevail.

Today is the best day for all of us to recharge, re-engage, re-energize, and, most of all, re-commit to our passion.

Rowling was able to push through her adversity, using 3 main tactics that now apply to our lives as well:

  1. She was willing to make peace with her situation. We must make peace with where we are right now — it's not perfect, it's not what we expected, but it's where we are.  Life is all about how we adjust and adapt. Be flexible.

  2. She believed every day was a new opportunity to showcase her talents — to herself. She only cared about her view of the work; no one else mattered. She believed in her ability as a writer, even though she had yet to sell a single word.

  3. She was never going to quit on her dream. After her divorce, her resolve, her mental toughness became stronger. The more time she had to endure financial hardships, the stronger her resolve became.

We all need to get stronger mentally and make peace with where we are right now.  Something great is going to happen to those who never stop dreaming. Make sure today you keep your dreams alive.

Re-commit today.

P.S. If you are in search of a book recommendation, our team at The Daily Coach highly recommends The Warrior of The Light: A Manual by Paulo Coelho. The book invites us to live out our dreams to embrace the uncertainty of life, and to rise to our own unique destiny. In his inimitable style, Coelho shows readers how to embark upon the way of the Warrior: the one who appreciates the miracle of being alive, the one who accepts failure, and the one whose quest leads to becoming the person they want to be.
