Today is a Gift

What we do with every precious new day and how we utilize our 24 hours, 1,440 minutes, and 86,400 seconds is our choice.

“Youth is not entirely a time of life; it is a state of mind. Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years. People grow old by deserting their ideals. You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubts; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair.”

— Douglas MacArthur

A special day is every time you wake up and have the opportunity to experience more life. It is a gift that should be cherished and celebrated. The freedom of choice gives us the unique privilege to cultivate the life we desire while changing the life we are living. We can choose to stay stuck and bitter in the past or inspired and optimistic about the possibilities that await us right now.

What we do with every precious new day and how we utilize our 24 hours, 1,440 minutes, and 86,400 seconds is our choice. Understand if you are not planning your future, you will become part of someone else's plan for the future. Our daily action either propels us forward one step at a time or deters and distracts us from our true calling.

As you read the following declarations, may you realize life is not about perfection but progress. You do not need to be perfect just 1% better than yesterday.

  • Acknowledge your mistakes and learn from them.

  • Solving problems is a team effort. Everyone brings something different to the table.

  • Intellectual humility can help us discover common grounds, build better relationships, and be more effective leaders.

  • We work to earn money, but we don't work just for money.

  • Decisions should be grounded by facts.

  • Behind every successful leader, there is a creative and robust group of people.

  • Realize your ignorance can be invisible.

  • Do we work because we have to or because we want to?

  • A wise person knows when to break the rules.

  • Diversity of thinking makes for powerful teams.

  • Find people willing to dream with you.

  • Live your life the way you want to be remembered.

  • Most problems we face are our own making.

  • Success without meaning is unrewarding.

  • Mastery is getting better and better at what you do daily.

  • Work is less about what we do. The impact created on us and others is what drives meaning.

  • Sometimes you must learn to become good at something else to find fulfillment.

Understand, there is no virtue in living below your potential and squandering your time. See every situation as an occasion to grow, learn, and prosper while always being somebody who makes everybody feel like somebody. As American singer and songwriter, Dave Grohl would say, "Always have the highest bar for yourself. Wake up every day, and no matter how crappy you feel, want to change something for the better. Do something that makes someone happy. Create something that inspires someone. Be someone's light when they are hopeless."
