You’re Never Just Anything

Being a star in your role isn’t about status. It’s about attitude. It’s about energy. It’s about how you elevate others — day in and day out.

McNeese State’s magical run in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament may have ended last weekend when the 12-seed from Lake Charles, Louisiana, lost to No. 4 Purdue — just days after a stunning upset over No. 5 Clemson.

But the Cowboys’ legacy will live far beyond the scoreboard — not just because of their fearless play or their tournament run. It’s because of a 22-year-old student manager named Amir “Aura” Khan — and the light he shined on what it means to lead from any position.

Khan, a Lake Charles native, became a viral sensation after a video surfaced of him walking to the court alongside players, boombox in hand, rapping with infectious energy and joy. What began as a pregame ritual transformed into a national moment — and, in many ways, a leadership lesson.

“If they kept manager stats for rebounding and wiping up wet spots on the court, I’d put up Wilt Chamberlain numbers,” Khan said, flashing his signature charisma.

But beneath the humor lies something deeper. Khan isn’t trying to be someone else. He’s not chasing the spotlight. He’s owning his role with pride — not waiting for a fancier title to make an impact. He’s serving with joy — putting the team’s needs first. And he’s lifting up everyone around him — simply by being himself.

Yes, the endorsements have come — from Buffalo Wild Wings, TickPick, and Insomnia Cookies. But none of that swayed Khan’s focus. In every interview, he redirected the spotlight back to the team, the program, and the city.

Amir Khan reminds us: You don’t need a special title to lead. You don’t need a marquee platform to make an impact and influence culture. You just need the courage to bring your full self to the moment you’re in — and to do it in service of something greater than yourself.

In business, in sports, and in life, there are moments when our roles may feel small. Invisible. Forgettable. But being a star in your role isn’t about status. It’s about attitude. It’s about energy. It’s about how you elevate others — day in and day out.

Amir Khan didn’t score a single point in the NCAA Tournament. But he lit up the whole arena.

Let’s remind our teams — and ourselves — that leadership isn’t always loud or in the spotlight. Sometimes, it’s quiet and behind the scenes — embracing your unique aura to lift the room and make others better.

Because whether you’re a head coach or a student manager, a CEO or a summer intern — you’re never just anything.

You’re a vital part of something bigger — and it’s in trusting that truth where your greatness and the team’s greatness begin to flourish.
